Introduction
Highly relevant today, World War II has much to teach us, not onlyabout the profession of arms, but also about military preparedness, global strategy, and combined operations in the coalition war againstfascism. To commemorate the nation's 50th anniversary of World War II,the U.S. Army has published a variety of materials to help educateAmericans about that momentous experience. These works provide greatopportunities to learn about and renew pride in an Army that fought somagnificently in what has been called 'the mighty endeavor.'
World War II was waged on land, on sea, and in the air overseveral diverse theaters of operation for approximately six years. Thefollowing essay is one of a series of campaign studies highlightingthose struggles that, with their accompanying suggestions for furtherreading, are designed to introduce you to one of the Army's significantmilitary feats from that war.
This brochure was prepared in the U.S. Army Center of MilitaryHistory by Mark D. Sherry. I hope this absorbing account of that periodwill enhance your appreciation of American achievements during WorldWar II.
JOHN W. MOUNTCASTLE China DefensiveThe China Theater of Operations more resembled the Soviet-German war onthe Eastern Front than the war in the Pacific or the war in WesternEurope. On the Asian continent, as on the Eastern Front, an Alliedpartner, China, carried the brunt of the fighting. China had been atwar with Japan since 1937 and continued the fight until the Japanesesurrender in 1945. The United States advised and supported China'sground war, while basing only a few of its own units in China foroperations against Japanese forces in the region and Japan itself. Theprimary American goal was to keep the Chinese actively in the Alliedwar camp, thereby tying down Japanese forces that otherwise might bedeployed against the Allies fighting in the Pacific.
